The Inhabited Roccolo: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Edoardo Milesi's Award-Winning Design Transforms a Bird Catcher Hut into a Modern Haven

Edoardo Milesi - Archos srl presents a unique architectural marvel, The Inhabited Roccolo. This private house is a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional bird catcher hut, embodying a seamless blend of tradition and innovation. The design, inspired by the concept of living in harmony with nature, won the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021.

The Inhabited Roccolo stands out for its unique design properties. It offers an escape from the urban world, sublimating aesthetic ideals in the modesty of simple forms and natural materials, and leaving the complexity to the surrounding nature. This vertical structure connects the earth and the cosmos, offering a unique living experience.

The design realization technology involves the use of reinforced concrete and wood for the structures, and natural wood, corten steel, and titanium zinc for the coatings. The house occupies a coverage area of 112.32 square meters with a total residential area of 332.13 square meters distributed over four levels.

The design project, which started in January 2015 and finished in December 2017, involved a team of experts including Ing. Paolo Abbadini for concept design, Ing. Sebastiano Moioli for structures, Ing. Alessandro Nani for mechanical systems design, and Marlegno s.r.l. for wooden structures.

The design research underpinning The Inhabited Roccolo was extensive. The project started from the impossibility, for geological reasons, to preserve the existing building and from the awareness of the importance of maintaining the necessary human protection. The new construction is inspired by the "roccolo" typology, and is reinterpreted in a contemporary key. The main feature of the toll booth is the morphological discontinuity of the fronts, made up of heterogeneous merged and projecting volumes, padded with different materials: concrete, larch wood left to natural oxidation, short steel and opaque and pre-oxidized zinc-titanium sheet.

Despite the challenges, Edoardo Milesi - Archos srl successfully created a contemporary reinterpretation of a typical building of the Lombard landscape. The project does not represent a simple mimetic operation, but a refined integration between the Roccolo and the surrounding territory. The result is a home that is not just a dwelling, but a place that connects the earth and the cosmos through the soul.

The Inhabited Roccolo, a testament to Edoardo Milesi - Archos srl's innovative design approach, is a reminder of the transience of life and the importance of living in harmony with nature. It is a design that truly embodies the essence of the Silver A' Design Award, showcasing outstanding expertise and innovation.
